I taught part-time at the University of Aruba from 2012 to 2024, across macroeconomics in the Faculty of Accounting, Finance and Marketing and political and economic development and small island developing states economics in the Faculty of Arts and Science. Most of my teaching now runs through the Dutch Caribbean Digital Competence Network, where the audience is working researchers and public servants rather than undergraduates.
Licensing cost shapes most of what I build there. SPSS seats are expensive, and on a small island the institutions least able to absorb the price are the ones paying it. When a licence lapses the usual outcome is that the analysis stops, not that the researcher picks up another method. So the courses run on R. The material is openly licensed and deposited, because a course sitting in a folder on one laptop is only as durable as the licence it replaced.

Introduction to R for SPSS Users

Seven episodes taking an SPSS user to a reproducible R script: reading data, transforming it with dplyr, plotting with ggplot2, and writing an analysis that someone else can rerun. The full lesson is free to read and reuse at dcdc.network/r. Piloted in Aruba in April 2026 with twenty-five public servants, researchers, and analysts. Every respondent said they would attend another session. The material is archived on Zenodo under a concept DOI, so each new edition mints its own version identifier under the same record.
The same skeleton, localised. Only the examples and the narrative change, and the rule for replacing a dataset is that it has to carry the same data shapes and the same teaching beats, not merely the same subject. This edition runs on the national team’s World Cup qualifying campaign. It is co-facilitated with a local coordinator and includes a trainer day. The point is that it runs without me.
